Mr. Jukka Peltokangas, a co-owner and the Sales / R&D Manager of HOISKO speaks for Finnish wood. The good qualities of wood and the sustainable Finnish forestry are well-known but sometimes underestimated when it comes to processed wood products such as cross laminated timber. Mr. Peltokangas wants to remind builders of the linkage between Finnish wood and a high quality CLT product in an interview by Pentti Höri in Pietarsaaren Sanomat newspaper in 12.4.2019.

”Builders are not always familiar with dissimilarities between the CLT products and therefore strength classifications may be left without requiring. As the demand grows it is probable to have products in the markets without any standardizations. If certificates are not correct in every aspect there is a chance for constructional errors.” Especially in public construction Mr. Peltokangas longs after customers’ requirements for clear origins of raw materials as well as standardization of production processes.

”Mastering the gluing technique is the key. It separates the best from the rest in the CLT industry.” — ”It is developed to the point where the structure breaths.” As a special feature HOISKO glues the board edges in order to reduce cracks between the boards. This makes the surface visually pleasant.

Living in a solid timber structure home is safe. A CLT wall does not usually need additional vapor barriers or insulation. Therefore one-piece solid wood wall components are free from moisture condensation and air leaks, structural errors and mold.

HOISKO’s raw material has the national C24 strength classification. The Finnish wood is superior to most European materials by its durability in principle. HOISKO CLT is CE marked as well. The polyurethane adhesive, as well as the whole HOISKO CLT product has the national low emission classification M1 for building materials.

also in the new Satavuo eco-school in Laukaa, Finland, for the first time.  In addition to HOISKO CLT solid wood walls, the materials and services for the school have been chosen to implement the greener perspective, from local food and solar paneling to low emission transportation.

The school is planned to serve hundred pupils for hundred years. By a precise planning it is possible to reach healthier and more cost-effective way to construct with cross laminated timber than with more traditional ways.

The combined school and day care center was the first larger building after the opening of the HOISKO factory in the spring 2017. Other larger buildings made of HOISKO CLT are e.g. Hukanhauta day care center in Joensuu, therapeutic apartments in Alajärvi and in Lapua, Vaasa Innovation Center and a wooden multi-storey house Konsulintorni in Kirkkonummi. HOISKO is a strong actor also in the construction fields of sports centers and housing.

#Kimppakämppä was a co-operational project of three companies Tapio Anttila Collection, Plusliving and HOISKO, complementing the 2017 fair theme ”Tomorrow’s home”. #Kimppakämppä was characterized as a ”harmonic” and ”home-like” space ”one would enjoy to stay living in”. The solid wood structure of HOISKO CLT ”charmed the jury”, as well as the home-like shadowy lightning.

A part of history was written in HOISKO

as the Finnish eco-school of Laukaa chose HOISKO CLT for the building material, writes Johanna Heikkilä in Ilkka newspaper. Laukaa eco-school is the first public project for HOISKO and corresponds to the approximate material use of ten single family houses.

Laukaa eco-school is designed by architect SAFA Tero Wéman from Arkkitehtipalvelu and will hold the principals of ecology and sustainability in every possible aspect such as using local food, transportation and renewing energy. In addition, says Pekka Mikkonen from Laukaa municipality, the eco-school is reaching for status of a pedagogical forerunner. Wood as a building material was an obvious choice, and HOISKO CLT solid wood components fit perfectly to the project theme. With HOISKO CLT, it is now possible to minimize the eco-school carbon footprint. Hanna Ahopelto from HOISKO appreciates the reference project emphasizing company’s critical values of healthy, safe and responsible construction, Heikkilä writes.

Pasi Sompasaari, the NCC general foreman describes the external wall units’ thickness to be 260 mm and interior walls’ 140 mm. The building components are placed by a crane and joined using screws and bolts. The highest wall units reach up to 12 meters. An owning partner of HOISKO, a construction firm Rakennusliike M. Ranta is in charge of the erection at the building site.

The first CLT wall units are expected to be in place by the Easter in three weeks and the rest 100 units in May, Pekka Mikkonen explains the project schedule to the newspaper. The building acceptance takes place in April 2018 and after the  two months ventilation the children are welcomed.

”The new HOISKO CLT factory is a great example of local economic recovery”

praised the Finnish Minister of Agriculture and the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen in the factory opening speech on Tuesday. Tiilikainen complimented public and private sectors’ co-operation after Alajärvi facing abrupt structural change. The upcoming adjustments in the national fire safety and energy performance regulations taking place in 2018 forward wood usage also in multi-story apartment building construction. In addition, innovative wood usage furthers the governmental aim of making Finland the top country for bioeconomy.

Mikko Tiirola from The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) promoted the possibilities of solid wood construction especially from the viewpoint of the climate change prevention. Tiirola appreciated the participation of the local forestry management association Metsänhoitoyhdistys Suomenselkä in the HOISKO value chain as an opening act for the mentioned party in enhancing their product demand.

The official opening ceremony of the HOISKO CLT factory was performed by Minister Tiilikainen. Along with Tiilikainen and Tiirola the speeches were held by the Mayor of Alajärvi Vesa Koivunen, the Federation of the Finnish Enterprises South Ostrobothnia Chairman Anne Niemi and Lasse Heikkilä. CLT Finland CEO Markku Herrala and Chairman Jukka Peltokangas welcomed the guests and Hoisko Elementary School pupils greeted guests with music.
